It’s clear that this movie was written from the heart, and Jesse Eisenberg’s script is certainly strong, with great dialogue and constant different interpretations of the phrase “Real pain.” Benji and David have very believable looks, and the other characters, while not three-dimensional, are given plenty of time to shine, especially James. As for directing, Jesse Eisenberg does a good job in his debut. The film is well shot, and while there’s not a lot of variety, it evokes a simple but realistic tone. Eisenberg tackles a strong subject and I think he does it well. I’m impressed with some of the things he managed to capture on location, which makes some of the emotions even stronger. But of course, the strongest aspect of this film is the acting and the dynamic between Eisenberg and Culkin.
Both actors do a great job, especially Culkin. Benji’s character is truly fascinating throughout the film, as the audience constantly sees the results of his grief and David’s reactions to them only further strengthen their bond. Even though they’re cousins in this film, they really feel like brothers reconnecting. Overall, I had a great time with this film. I doubt it’ll blow anyone away and there aren’t any moments of extreme catharsis, but whatever it does, it does very well.
